Workshop Safety

Foundational Making Skills

01 — Risk Assessment

The workshop was the starting point for every project that followed. Before making anything, I needed to understand how tools, materials, and people interact within the space.

Different tools introduced different risks, from rotating drill bits to exposed cutting blades.

Accurate measuring often mattered more than the cutting itself. A mistake made before fabrication usually became impossible to hide later.

PPE became more meaningful once I understood what each piece of equipment was actually protecting against.

Workshop organisation affects behaviour. Clear pathways and accessible safety equipment reduce unnecessary risks.

"Measure twice, cut once" sounded repetitive at first, but became one of the most useful habits I developed all year.

02 — Workshop Layout

Workshop Layout

Planning the workshop layout highlighted how design decisions can influence both safety and efficiency.

Considered how users move between different workstations during making.

Reduced congestion around machines that required additional space and attention.

Ensured emergency equipment remained visible and accessible.

Organised tools according to workflow rather than storage convenience.

Small layout changes significantly improved both movement and visibility within the space.
